How ERGs Can Help You Find Sages and Guides

Look at any story of someone who has overcome odds to reach significant goals, and you will find a character in each story that looks like the one Joseph Campbell, an American professor of literature, discovered in his research for his book “The Hero With a Thousand Faces.” This is a character that can be found in ancient tales of heroes from Homer’s Odyssey, thru Tolkien’s Hobbit, to the modern-day story, The Matrix. All these heroes we’re supported through their journey of self-development by sages and guides. Whether it’s Mentor, Gandalf the Wizard, or Morpheus, respectively, there is always a sage and guide. These sages and guides are critical to the ultimate development of the hero or heroine.

So, how vital are sages and guides for you and your community members today? Where can you find them? Better yet, how can your ERGs/BRGs produce a steady stream of them for your community? Our guest, Michael Dumlao, will answer these and other essential questions on this topic in this episode of ERG PowerTalk.

I met with Michael a short while ago and found him a fascinating storyteller full of deep insights. He is an artist, author, and activist equipped with more than twenty years of experience advancing diversity, equity, and social justice through award-winning brand management, digital marketing, and creative storytelling. He’s worked in corporate, federal, academic, and non-profit environments. He is also the author of “The Wisdom of Guncles,” a book about the LGBTQ community’s relationship with family and how a pantheon of gay uncles served as sages and guides in the journey to personal empowerment. While written from an LGBTQ perspective, the lessons taught by Michael about sages and guides provide value to all dimensions of underrepresented people. Join us for this insightful episode.
